Advice On Siting Of Carbon Monoxide Detectors In Domestic Properties

All Carbon Monoxide Detectors always need to be fitted in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions or in the absence of these BS EN 50292 Electrical apparatus for the detection of carbon monoxide in domestic premises.

As trained QHS gas engineers are able to test, and in most cases install Carbon Monoxide Alarms during annual Gas Safety Checks (as fulfilling 12 monthly Landlord Gas Safety Record checks is a legal requirement), they are also able to advise as where not to site carbon monoxide alarms, so we trust you will find the following advice on where NOT to install a carbon monoxide detector within a property helpful. We advise you don’t fit them:

•             in an enclosed space (for example in a cupboard or behind a curtain) if the combustion appliance is installed in a cupboard or compartment a CO Detector should be located just outside of this e.g. converted airing cupboard etc.

•             where it can be obstructed (for example by tall furniture)

•             directly above a sink

•             next to a door or window

•             next to an extractor fan

•             next to an air vent or other similar ventilation openings

•             in an area where the temperature may drop below – 10 degrees Celsius or exceed 40 degrees Celsius (unless the carbon monoxide detector is designed otherwise to do so)

•             where dirt and dust may block the sensor

•             in a damp or humid location

•             in the immediate vicinity of a cooking appliance

Where there is a requirement for a heat sensor, smoke alarm or a carbon monoxide detector to be hard wired, these works must be carried out by a NICEIC qualified electrician, work QHS compliant electricians are therefore able to do for our clients. As part of our undertaking of Annual Gas Safety Checks via it's Gas Safe Registered QHS experienced gas engineers we are able to provide safety warning systems testing on carbon monoxide alarms, heat sensors and smoke alarms, within a single visit, enhancing customer convenience.
